On July 21st, China Science Academy (CAS) posted a report named “Gametech – a new technology cluster in the process of digital-real integration” and claimed that the next generation of digital-real integration will rely on the development of “Gametech”, or in more simple terms, technologies that developed intended for video games.

After explaining the history of video games from the “Space War!”, the 50 pages-long report focuses on how video game technologies change real life. For example, the need of reducing lag and increase the Internet speed on mobile games motivated the 5G technology and the need for high-resolution 3D rending pushed the development of semiconductor and Cloud technologies. The report also mentioned the importance of game tech for other high-end technologies like AR, VR, Artificial Intelligence, etc.

The report is a surprise considering the gaming industry is currently under strict government moderation and play time for all minors under 18 in China is restricted to 2-3 hours. It is rare to see a formal organization like CAS affirmative of the value of video games. The trend “CAS report said the next-gen tech is relying on game tech” went to the top 18th of Weibo’s hot trend list on July 21st.
