GDC Survey Reveals One-Third of Game Developers Affected by Layoffs in 2023
A recent survey conducted by the Game Developers Conference (GDC), in partnership with Game Developer and Omdia, has revealed a concerning trend in the gaming industry: one-third of game developers experienced layoffs in 2023. The survey, which included over 3000 developers, highlights the ongoing issue of job security in the industry.
According to the GDC State of the Industry Survey, 35% of developers reported that their companies faced layoffs last year, with 7% personally laid off. The quality assurance (QA) sector was hit hardest, seeing 22% of its workforce laid off. Looking forward, over half of the surveyed developers expressed concern about potential layoffs in the next 12 months.
The survey also shed light on the rising interest in unionization, with 57% of workers now in favor, up from 53% the previous year. Additionally, the survey explored the use of generative AI in development, with 49% of developers stating its implementation in their workplace. Interestingly, indie developers (37%) were more likely to use generative AI compared to AAA and AA developers (22%).
While blockchain interest has waned, the gaming industry is abuzz with anticipation for the "Nintendo Switch successor," with 8% of developers currently creating games for the platform and 32% finding it an intriguing prospect. The survey paints a multifaceted picture of the gaming industry, balancing technological advancements with ongoing employment challenges.
