ChatGPT, a well-known AI program, is said to have written the official apology for the poorly received Lord of the Rings: Gollum game. This surprising revelation comes from interviews with former Daedalic staff by German gaming outlet GameTwo. After the game's release, Daedalic expressed regret for the "underwhelming experience" it provided players and vowed to fix it with future updates.

According to two sources who spoke to GameTwo, Daedalic was in the dark about the apology's content before its publisher, Nacon, released it. As it stands, Gollum is this year's lowest-rated game on both Metacritic and OpenCritic. The Guardian dismissed it as a "derivative, uninteresting and fundamentally broken stealth action adventure."

Paul Schulze, a former senior developer at Daedalic, divulged the game had a relatively modest budget of 15 million EUR for a AAA title in 2023. Issues like inadequate funding and a lack of time led to incomplete elements in the game. For instance, cutscenes meant to be animated were omitted, leaving audio cues as their only representation.

Schulze also commented on the game's incomplete argument system between Gollum and Smeagol, revealing that a makeshift mechanic replaced the initially ambitious design. As the game was rushed to meet its 2023 deadline, players were left with a simplified version that did little justice to the complexities of the characters or the Lord of the Rings universe.
