Square Enix has unveiled an anime-inspired opening movie for its upcoming 2.5D remake, Star Ocean The Second Story R. The cinematic features protagonists Claude and Rena, along with their team, prepping for an epic journey before confronting a cosmic menace. Crafted by animation studio Yostar Pictures, the opening is set to "Stella," a track penned by Japanese duo SUIREN.
Star Ocean The Second Story R serves as a fresh take on the 1998 classic RPG, marking the series' second chapter. Unlike the HD-2D engine used in games like Live a Live and Octopath Traveller II, the remake fuses modern 3D settings with nostalgic 2D sprite characters. It also updates the original game with a revised soundtrack, multiple difficulty options, and several quality-of-life upgrades. Core features, such as real-time combat, a robust skill system, and Private Actions, are all polished to enhance player engagement.
Fans can already place orders for the physical standard edition, which packs in digital extras like a Pangalactic Federation Longsword, Forest Knuckles, a recovery item set, and a Sunrise Ring. Star Ocean enthusiasts can enjoy every main entry on PlayStation platforms, with the series offering an interesting blend of sci-fi and fantasy elements. The remake will hit the shelves for Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, and PC via Steam on November 2, 2023.
