CD PROJEKT RED, the renowned game development studio behind popular titles like The Witcher franchise and Cyberpunk franchise, has announced some significant changes to their teams and game development philosophy. In a recent message from CEO Adam Kiciński, the company revealed their plans to reshape their teams and focus on creating quality games without resorting to crunch.
The studio has been undergoing a series of transformations, including implementing Agile methodologies and reshaping their development process. Now, CD PROJEKT RED is turning their attention to refining the structure of their teams. The goal is to have teams that are not only composed of the best people but also tailored to meet the specific needs of each project. This means having more agile and effective teams that can deliver the best role-playing games.
In order to achieve this vision, the company has conducted a thorough assessment of all their teams. Unfortunately, the assessment revealed that the studio is currently overstaffed. While they have talented individuals on board, the company anticipates that there won't be enough opportunities for them in the next year based on current and expected project needs. As a result, CD PROJEKT RED has made the difficult decision to part ways with around 100 people, which accounts for approximately 9% of the entire team.
The studio acknowledges that this news is not easy to hear, but they believe it is necessary for the growth and success of CD PROJEKT RED. The affected employees will be given ample time to process and adjust to the change, with some being let go as late as Q1 2024. To ensure a smooth transition, the company is offering a comprehensive severance package to all those affected.
Adam Kiciński, in his message, also expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the contributions of the affected team members. He emphasized that although their professional paths may diverge, the relationships and impact they have had on CD PROJEKT RED will remain strong. He encouraged them to stay connected and wished them success and fulfillment in their future endeavors.
The announcement from CD PROJEKT RED highlights the company's commitment to creating quality games while prioritizing the well-being of their employees. By refining their teams and making necessary adjustments, the studio aims to continue delivering immersive and engaging gaming experiences that fans have come to expect.
