Just now, Tencent launched its new extended reality business and has started internal recruiting, according to Sina Technology’s exclusive report. The report states that Tencent regards Extended Reality (XR) business as a crucial step that the company is working hard to build in response to CEO Pony Ma’s concept of the Complete Reality Internet. The final goal is to form a world-class team with original cutting-edge technologies in preparation for the future commodification of the Metaverse.

The new XR business includes more than 40 open positions covering three major directions: content ecology, operation, and technology development. Tencent will also open an XR game studio to boost the layout.

The concept of a “Complete Reality Internet” was raised by Tencent’s CEO, Pony Ma, at the very end of 2020. “Quan Zhen”, or “Complete Reality”, means to reserve the rights and nature of creativity in Chinese Taoism. Pony Ma linked this ancient phrase with today’s internet, meaning that the online and offline worlds are more fully integrated, connecting people, information, things and services closer. Pony Mas Complete Reality Internet is just another variation of the popular Metaverse from the description. What Tencent can do to differentiate the Complete Reality Internet from the Metaverse still remains to be seen.
