It has come to light that the developers of the popular online game 'Genshin Impact' from HoYoverse have filed a DMCA removal request against the individual responsible for creating an unofficial private server.

Disruptive to the Game's Business Model

Since 'Genshin Impact' is a live-service online game, players are constantly connected to the official servers while playing. The game operates on a free-to-play model, generating revenue through in-game currency purchases.

However, there are unofficial private servers that exist, allowing players to modify the game's rules to make it easier to acquire resources like Trailblaze Power (stamina) and in-game currencies. Some users have been utilizing these servers to progress through the game more effortlessly.

Stringent Action with Three DMCA Requests

In response to these unofficial servers, lawyers representing Cognosphere, the developer behind 'Genshin Impact,' filed DMCA requests in a California court. They alleged that a user named 'casksteven' had infringed upon Cognosphere's exclusive rights and requested the removal of the tools that had been publicly shared on GitHub.

But it didn't stop there. They also submitted DMCA requests to the hosting company of the targeted user's website (which has either moved or been taken down), demanded the individual's personal information, and even filed a DMCA request with Google, the parent company of YouTube, to remove videos (which have since been deleted by the uploader) that showcased the use of these tools.

The Temptation to Gain an Advantage in Online Games

Many players desire to progress advantageously in online games, but involvement with unofficial tools can lead to accusations of cheating and potentially disrupt the game's business model. It is essential to enjoy games ethically and within the prescribed guidelines to maintain a fair and enjoyable gaming experience.
