Sony has officially unveiled its portable gaming device, the PlayStation Portal remote player, set to launch later this year at 199.99 USD. Aimed at extending the PS5 gaming experience, the handheld device will stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi onto an eight-inch LCD screen, boasting 1080p resolution at 60fps.
Hideaki Nishino, Senior VP at Sony Interactive Entertainment, highlighted that the PlayStation Portal would connect remotely to your PS5, allowing a seamless transition between devices. Supported games installed on your PS5 can be played using the DualSense controller, maintaining the feel of the PS5 gaming experience.
Designed with controllers closely resembling PS5's DualSense, the PlayStation Portal offers adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. While it can play media mirrored from your PS5, local run functionality is absent, requiring a Wi-Fi connection. Notably, the device is incompatible with Sony's upcoming cloud streaming for PS5 games, requiring at least 5Mbps, with 15Mbps recommended for optimal performance.

An early review by IGN emphasized an impressive lack of latency. Unlike standard Bluetooth, the PlayStation Portal uses PlayStation Link, a proprietary low latency, lossless audio technology. This standard will be available for third-party manufacturers and is compatible with new Sony wireless headsets and buds.
Although the device's battery size is undetermined, Sony is targeting a battery life akin to the DualSense controller, roughly seven to nine hours. Previously known as Project Q, the PlayStation Portal was announced in May with rumors pointing to a November release, though the exact date remains unconfirmed.
