'Street Fighter V'; Danny & Michael Philippou
Danny and Michael Philippou, the Australian twin filmmakers behind the Sundance horror sensation Talk to Me, are in final talks to direct Legendary's Street Fighter, the feature adaptation of Capcom's classic video game.
Street Fighter is one of the most enduring fighting video game franchises of all time, beginning with the 1987 arcade game Street Fighter and setting a high water mark for arcade fighting games with Street Fighter II.
The Philippous' take on the material and which characters would be involved are still unknown, but conversations with a short list of writers are currently underway. Legendary is working with Capcom to produce the adaptation. Street Fighter has had two previous Hollywood adaptations, the 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and the 2009 film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. Both were commercial and critical failures, but the Van Damme version has since achieved cult status.
The Philippou brothers' feature debut, Talk to Me, premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and was acquired by A24 for a seven-figure sum. The Philippous signed with WME after the festival. Sources say the duo's success with Talk to Me helped them secure a low- to mid-seven-figure deal to direct Street Fighter.
