On Mar 14th, 2022, on a Chinese TV news program On the Spot, a player requested a song for Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring. The Chinese love song called “Damned Gentleness” is about how a boy expresses his complicated emotions towards his ex-girlfriend. But in this case, the Elden Ring player was simply sharing their bitter and joyful experience in the game.

On the Spot is a local TV news program of Guangdong Radio and Television. After its news section, there’s a very popular song request segment. Normally, viewers would request songs for the one they care about and share their feelings hinted in the lyrics of the song. Anyone can send a request with a message to the staff of On the Spot. Hence this funny scene of “Tarnished requested Damned Gentleness for Hidetaka Miyazaki”.

In fact, On the Spot staff are quite familiar with such requests. People were making song requests for anime or game characters as a joke since early 2021, some earlier examples including “Jack Cooper from Titanfall 2 requested the song Friends to BT7274” and “Dio from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure requested the song No One for Jonathan Joestar”. These requests went viral on social media and attracted people to make more requests for Genshin Impact, Arknights, Honor of Kings, League of Legends, Attack on Titan, Demon Slayer, etc.

Elden Ring is clearly one of the crowd’s favorites. Three days after the first song request about Elden Ring, another request showed up. It is from Blaidd to Ranni. This time, the joke is not in the name of the song, but the lyrics. Ranni, a very popular NPC in Elden Ring, her name pronounces very similarly to the word “For you” in Mandarin. The song being requested has a ling saying “For you, I turned into a werewolf”.

It’s now clear when would these silly jokes and puns stop, since Elden Ring has just updated a bunch of content, probably players would keep expressing their hearts to this game and its staff in the near future.
