Pokémon Sleep: Improving Sleep Patterns in Japan and Beyond
The Pokémon Company has disclosed intriguing sleep data from over 100,000 users in 7 countries (Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Canada) for its app ‘Pokémon Sleep,’ released on July 20, 2023. This unique app combines sleep tracking with Pokémon-themed gameplay, allowing users to engage with Pokémon like Snorlax while they sleep.
The survey revealed that the average global sleep duration for the first 7 days of app use was 6 hours and 28 minutes. However, Japan ranked the lowest with an average of 5 hours and 52 minutes, 36 minutes less than the global average, and 24 minutes shorter than Italy, the next lowest.
Interestingly, continuous play of "Pokémon Sleep" over 3 months showed positive effects on sleep duration in Japanese users. Average sleep time increased by approximately 30 minutes after one month and about 1 hour and 10 minutes after three months, suggesting the app's potential role in improving sleep habits.
The survey also found that about 83% of Japanese users playing for more than 3 months looked forward to waking up in the morning, and around 88% felt their sleep habits had improved. This highlights the app's positive influence beyond just being a game, potentially aiding in healthier sleep patterns.
Pokémon Sleep is currently available for free on iOS and Android platforms, with optional in-app purchases.
