Valve Ends Steam Support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1
Valve has announced the discontinuation of Steam support for older Windows operating systems, including Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Users of these platforms will need to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 to ensure continued access to Steam's services and features.
While Steam will still function on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 for the time being, Valve will no longer provide updates or bug fixes for these versions. This change implies that future versions of Steam may eventually become incompatible with these older operating systems.
The decision to end support aligns with Valve's need to keep pace with the embedded version of Google Chrome used in Steam, which ceased supporting older Windows versions some time ago. This move also reflects the broader tech industry's shift towards more current operating systems.
Notably, Valve's support for Windows 7 persisted even after Microsoft officially ended its support in 2020. Windows 8 and 8.1 users, however, saw support from Microsoft conclude in January 2023.
This transition marks a significant change for Steam users on older Windows versions and emphasizes the importance of staying updated with current technology standards. Valve's encouragement for users to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 underscores the company's commitment to providing a secure and efficient gaming platform.
