The Chinese classic animated film The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven has been made into 4k resolution by AI technology and was released yesterday on Xigua Video, a social video platform operated by ByteDance.

This is the first attempt to repair the film, which was created by Shanghai Animation Film Studio in the 1960s. As time goes by, the animated film has experienced issues like color distortion, low resolution, flawed appearance of lines and dots, among other problems. This time, it was in a package of six animated films with plans for 4K repair, initiated by Xigua Video and Volcengine.

In the 1960s, Uproar in Heaven took the animators four years to complete and was based on over 100,000 sketches. The story is from Journey to the West’s first seven chapters.

There are 36 animated films now available in 4K resolution on Xigua Video and Wasu Fresh Time app. The upcoming titles include Ginseng Kingdom, My Stage, and Rubik Cube Mansion.
